While it is possible to make an entirely new engine, I have learned that it may very well be MUCH easier to simply take a premade engine and modify that. There are a ton of engines out there, but the one that jumps to mind (and the most prominent and popular) is OGRE3D. I don't know if you've heard of it, though it is VERY popular and powerful. http://www.ogre3d.org/ for the link. What say you?

we are going to use an existing 3d engine, yes, but that won't give us an RTS game, just some graphics

I don't have a lot of experience with graphics... heck, I've hardly done much more than 2d grids, bar graphs, and such.  So, I leave these decisions to others.  All that matters is where we meet up in the middle, and making sure it all comes together seemlessly.

OGRE is just a 3D engine, not a pre made game, to clarify things.

Maybe - just maybe - if we were going for the Warcraft II look ^_^

Actually, it was so cartoony that if you were to increase the resolution it would still look good today.

it seems to be almost the same as Irrlicht (and probably other engines like it). deciding on which one to use will probably require some testing

However, OGRE is object-oriented, which is vastly useful. It keeps things much more simple, and ensures that when you see a line of code, it won't seem entirely irrelavent to what exactly it is coding.

just like Irrlicht, Java3D and virtually any other scene-based graphics engine Wink

Um... Duh? Don't I feel highly intelligent today! A stupid WC3 pretesting idea shot down by Darvin and 2play, and my grotesque lack of knowledge on open source engines exposed by 2play! Though OGRE is the most popular 3d open source engine out there; and besides, there is something unique about it in the Manual somewhere. Where, I do not know.

Don't feel stupid; we come here to discuss ideas so we don't act on stupid ones.  Warcraft III is a powerful game, and the map editor can do quite a lot.  However, having done a great deal of work with it, I know it has limitations.  It's great if you intend on making something arcade or at the same level of complexity as WC3, but the moment you try to go more complex, it gets hellish.
