Looking around here, I don't see any threads to discuss ourselves and our experience.  I think it's important from an organizational standpoint that the project management know where everyone stands in terms of experience and training.  You can give programmers good tools or bad tools, but it's the training and technique they have that will make a good program.  You might want an "introduction" section for threads like this, or just keep it to one thread and have everyone post in it.

Some of you guys may remember me from MEV.  I'm a second year Computer Engineering student at the University of British Columbia (it's in Vancouver).  I'm proficiant in C++ and Java, and more than willing to learn another language to help out in a project like this.  I don't have any experience beyond the lab work I've done in my courses, and I think an open source project like this would be a great place to finally put what I've learned to practical use.

I have taken courses in efficiancy of algorithms, data abstraction, and object oriented programming.  I understand that coding is only a small portion of program design, and have a strong conceptual understanding of class hierarchies and algorithm design.  With that said, I've never put those skills to work on a larger program.  I'll definitely need to work with more experienced project members to avoid errors related to said inexperience, but my technical know-how is sufficant enough that I don't need to be baby-sat.

Once again, really interesting project, and I hope I can be a part of it.  I've got my own school work to worry about (circuit analysis midterm next week...) and that has to come first, but this is the kind of project I've been wanting to get involved in for a LONG time.

Hey Darvin, good point.

Programming is not for me. Even simple Java is beyond my knowledge. I seem to see the structure and meaning of code pretty quick, but I can't write anything (yet)

At the moment I'm between the first and second period of my second year as Natural Science and Innovation Management study (that is one study, not two! Tongue) at the University of Utrecht.

That study covers physics and chemestry to a decent level, as well as various aspects of innovation magement, such as the economical, political, cultural, technical and organisational aspects.

In the third period we have an organisational course, which could be of help. Other than that, the focus of this study is to analyse innovation opportunities. To compare options from various points of view and choose the best solution, depending on the weight of the interests of these various parties. Because these options mostly concern innovations, new ideas or new ways to implent old ones, we are taught to read up on things before even thinking about a decision.

What I think that counts also, is that I've been modding games for quite some time, some more than others. BFME 2 most of all, but also Jagged Alliance 2, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo 2, Dungeon Siege (very limited), Red Alert 2, C&C Generals, and a few more I forgot.

In short, my function could be advisor, as well as some sort of management role.
Note: I may be slower than some in my decisions. Reason for that is that I think things over quite a lot, before making one.

As with Darvin, inexperience is part of me. Aside from the practice in class, I've done little related to managing. The position which counts most is probably the staff position at the 3rd Age modding forum.

Update: For the past few months I have attained the position of Network Leader at the Revora modding community. It certainly helped getting a bit of experience.

As far as modding goes, I've done some trivial modding in BFME2, and I've mastered the map editor of Warcraft III (which is effectively modding).   In recent years (since my formal training) I've become meticulous about leaving my code open to easy modifications by a future programmer who hasn't worked on the project.  This is especially important for something open source, where a future end user (ie, game designer) will invariably want to edit my code to suit his or her specific needs.

In terms of management, I was a moderator on MEV (and I am one on its spiritual successor, RTSCommunity), and ran the strategy section there.  I've also worked in several group projects in my post secondary education, although only two have been programming related.

Oh, and one last thing that I think we should all state:

At least, that is the nearest thing to it according to my English teacher.

Edit: removed the lock, it serves no purpose
