I can't decide which graphics engine to use, let's discuss it.

Pro's and cons:

Irrlicht
Pro: Fairly advanced, well supported, Easy to use, Cross-platform (might come in handy)
Con: Not very flexible, especially not when using the .NET version

DirectX
Pro: Anything is possible
Con: harder to use, still not very well supported in .NET

Microsoft XNA
Pro: easy to use, xbox 360 support
Con: is part of the XNA framework, which would be one more download for players, and is quite new

The last option is the one I'd prefer. From what I understand after reading their FAQ, it connects well with C# and includes features from D3DX, with more to come. It's also sure to work good with the Vista platform, which, together with WindowsXP SP2, will be the main platform by the time the engine is finished. It may seem new, but it's based on known material, XNA will be somewhat the replacement for MDX 2.0 and MDX 1.1.

The download would be a minor detail, we can include it in the game in the same way some games include DirectX.

Pure DirectX will likely prove to be to difficult, and if Irrlicht misses flexibility, it doesn't suit the goal we have in mind.

Edit: Stikied untill final choice is made

Ok, those who voted for Ithlicht and for DirectX, could you please shed some light on the reasons for your choice?
Thanks Smiley

XNA as it works best with C# and MS will probably support it the most as its the newest

*kick*

I did a quick google search on XNA and the capability to use it in a cross platform application, and its close to none existend from what I've found. But then again I didn't do an in-depth search.

I had a short discussion with 2play about using java for a project like this and about the java3d engine comming with java itself. Again I haven't done some research on it, but it sounds very promising when Java is used as programming engine.

heh, that's a mighty hard kick you gave.

We already pretty much decided that XNA isn't going to be our solution. Java does deserve a closer view, like you said on msn, it's new version seems to be quite a lot beter at 3D than it's previous versions.
