I've got a great idea, I'm going to give the engine a 3d anaglyph renderer (you know, where you use special glasses to see real depth). This will use the depth of objects to place them at different positions in a red and blue/green image which will be composited over eachother, to be seperated by common 3d glasses.

The depth of objects will be measured in units from the eye, so depth 1 means 1 unit (e.g. meter) from the camera.

If this works, we've got a unique selling point Smiley

It's a cool idea; I'd like to learn more about how that'd work (*after I'm done studying for my midterm on Wednesday, of course ;-)

It'd have to be an option, however, as I could imagine some people being turned off by it, and others simply being unable to get a pair of such glasses (they were all the rage about a decade ago, but I haven't seen a pair in ages).  It'd be interesting to look into other under-used representation styles which we could utilize.  I do like the idea of producing some degree of perspective, however, in our 2D world.

I've been interested in the idea of producing "layers" of 2D areas.  For instance, an overpass with a staircase to access the upper and lower areas.  This would certainly make good use of any rendering we could use to provide perspective.

well of course, it's just a different render mode in the engine. whether to use it or not, and whether to present it as an option or not, is up to the game developer.

I've also created a display implementation which uses 2 windows, which you can spread on 2 monitors or beamers in some kind of stereoscopic viewing installation. The class for this display is org.openwar.victory.graphics.j2d.Dual3DJDisplay

Well, my experience with graphics (or rather, the lack thereof) holds me back here.  All I can say is good job.
